UNDER BONNET CHECKS (SHOULD BE DONE WITH THE VEHICLE ON LEVEL GROUND)

Q1: Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the Engine Oil level ?
Ans: Point out the dipstick , remove the dipstick, clean and replace dipstick, remove dipstick again and the oil level should be more to the maximum level.

Q2: Open the bonnet , identify how you would check the Brake fluid level ?
Ans: Point out the Brake Fluid Reservoir, the brake fluid level should be more to the maximum level.

Q3: Open the bonnet and show me how you would check the Coolant / Antifreeze level ?
Ans: Point out the Header Tank (where fitted) or Radiator Filler Cap and the Coolant or Antifreeze level should be more to the maximum level. The engine should be cold.

Q4: How would you check if the Power Steering oil level ?
Ans: Identify the Power Steering reservoir, remove the cap clean dipstick , replace the cap and again remove the cap and on the dipstick the power steering oil level should be more to the maximum level. (can be checked with the engine hot or cold)

Q5: Open the bonnet and identify windscreen washer reservoir and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer fluid ?
Ans: Identify the Windscreen washer reservoir and and tell the examiner there should be plenty of fluid. When operating the screen washers, if the fluid does not come out quickly than the screen washer fluid might need topping up.

   
 

OUTSIDE VEHICLE CHECKS (IGNITION KEYS SHOULD REMAIN IN YOUR POSSESSION)

Q6: Tell me how you would find the information about the recommended Tyre Pressure for this vehicle?
Ans: The Manufacturer's Hand Book , Wall charts and use a reliable Gauge.

Q7: Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient amount of tread depth and that they are legal?
Ans: Inspect the tyres and see that there are no deep cuts or bulges on the tyre Sidewalls and the Tread Depth should be a Minimum of 1.6mm of tread depth across the center 3/4 of the breadth of the tread and all the way around the tread.

Q8: Tell me how you would check that the Service Brakes are in good working order before you set of on your journey?
Ans: Brake paddle should not feel spongy or slack and test the Service Brakes by driving a short distance, apply the Brakes and the vehicle should not pull either side.

Q9: Tell me how you would check that the Hand Brake / Parking Brake is in good working order before setting off on a journey?
Ans: The Hand Brake /Park Brake Lever should not be too high when applied and therefore its not at the end of its working travel. Also check, when the Parking Brake is applied try to move the vehicle and there should be some resistance.

Q10: Tell me how you would check that the Power Steering is work before setting off on your journey?
Ans: Put gentle pressure to the steering wheel before starting the engine, the steering wheel should fill hard, after starting the engine and the steering should feel lighter.

Q11: Show me and tell me that the head lights and the tail lights are working?
Ans: Switch the lights ON and show the examiner the front and rear lights. (some vehicles the ignition has to be switched on).

Q12: Show me and tell me that the Indicators are working?
Ans: Switch the Hazards Warning ON and walk around the vehicle to check their function.

Q13: How would you check that the Brake Lights are in good working order?
Ans: Press the Brake Paddle and look for reflections on garage wall or window, or ask someone to check if the brake lights are working. (ignition switch has to be turned ON on some vehicles).

Q14: How would you turn the Main Beam ON and how would you know that the Main Beam is ON ?
Ans: Switch the Ignition on and turn the head lamps on, than operate the the Main Beam switch, look on the display and you should notice a Blue Tell-Tail light on.

Q15: Can you tell me how you would you turn the Rear Fog lamp on, and how would you know if the rear fog lamps is on?
Ans: Turn the ignition on, switch the head lamps on, operate the Rear Fog Lamp switch to activate the rear fog lamp on and than look in the display and you should notice an Amber Tell-Tail light on.

Q16: Can you show me that the horn is working?
Ans: Press the horn switch and demonstrate. (turn ignition on if necessary).

Q17: What should you do if the ABS warning light remains ON on the display. And how would it effect your Service Brakes?
Ans: The Service Brakes would not be effected but you might get into a skid under heavy breaking, take the vehicle to the garage to have the ABS fault rectified.

Q18: How should the Head Restraint be adjusted?
Ans: Your Eye / Ear level should be in the middle of the Head Restraint.

Q19: How would you Demist your screen?
Ans: Switch your rear screen heater ON and switch your Heating Fan to full and use the air deflector to the screen and the side windows.
